These three-car Metropolitan-Cammell / BRCW units were introduced in 1954 for use upto Hadfield and Glossop on the Manchester-Sheffield-Wath 1500 V DC electrification.
Plans were considered for use from Manchester to Sheffield, but traction motor overheating while climbing to the Woodhead tunnel alledgedly ended this possible use.
