These three car units were first built in 1938 and a second batch in 1956 by Metropolitan Cammell and BRCW for use on the Merseyrail network, especially along the Wirral Line.
A point to note - these units gained front-end communicating doors in 1972 as a DoT requirement to work in tunnel sections.
